Royalty sees the Mets play the Nationals in DC!‏

After the King & I spent the night at Days Inn in Somerset, PA we got up that morning & we ate breakfast there. When we got done, I drove 185 miles to Nationals Park to see the Washington Nationals play the Mets that Sunday afternoon, May 18th. We wound up parking the car in a ten dollar lot since free parking in DC is few & far between. We didn't want to risk having a problem so we decided to play it safe. We parked the car at 12:45PM. We then walked over to the ballpark. I went to the box office to see what the cheapest tickets they had were. They told me $25 each. Upon hearing that, I walked away. A few minutes later I found some people who had extra tickets. They wanted $20 a ticket. I told them I'll give them $20 for the pair. Thankfully they decided to give in to me. The King ‎& I proceeded to walk into the center field gate. We met up upstairs under the press box in section 312. I saw some empty seats in the last row which was row J. I wound up staying there for the whole game. Shortly thereafter, I got comfortable I heard a guy a few rows down in front of me get my attention.  It was Andy Morgan who follows me on Twitter. His twitter handle is @natsfan37. He was with his wife & young son. A few minutes later he came up to introduce himself. It was nice to meet him. I remember following him because he was a Gio Gonzalez fan. Gio had signed something for his son. We spoke & we exchanged contact information. He said he may try to come up to Citi Field in August when the Nationals come back. I told him to let me know.

As for the game we saw, the Mets took an early 1-0 lead off of Nationals' starter Jordan Zimmerman when catcher Juan Centeno drove in a run with a single in the top of the second inning. The Nationals got even in the bottom half when Ian Desmond hit a solo homer to knot the score at one. The Nationals took the lead for good when Met killer catcher Wilson Ramos drove in a pair of runs with a double in the third inning & two more with a single in the fifth inning off of Mets' starter Zack Wheeler to go up 5-1. The Mets got two back in the top of the sixth but the Nationals added an insurance run in the eighth as they beat the Mets, 6-3.

Near the end of the game, I got a visit from a fellow roadtripper & ballpark chaser, Ben Fallon who stopped by with his son Declan. We follow each other on twitter also. Ben's twitter handle is @steel6rings. We've met a few times in the last year. I want to thank him for taking time to visit me. He said he would have came by earlier but he got an unexpected upgrade to a suite just before the game started.

On the way back home, the King & I stopped off at Burger King for a quick dinner in New Jersey on Route 1. We got back home around 11PM.

Monday morning I returned the car to Avis then I went to work. I wound up driving 1,172 miles safely over the weekend.

Stay tuned for another special post that will highlight the visit to Citi Field by the two teams we saw open the season in Sydney, Australia.

Thank you for reading & following along.

Royalty meets up with Rick Morris of the FDH Lounge in Cleveland, Ohio in the middle of May!‏

On Saturday, May 17th I woke up early so I could go to Avis to pick up a car rental for the weekend. I wound up getting a Ford Focus since that's all they had left. I drove it back home so I could pick up the King as we drove all day to go to Cleveland, Ohio. We stopped off at the rest area in Pennsylvania just past the Delaware Water Gap just before 1PM. Luckily we got there at the right time. When we came out of the rest room, the line was a mile long. A few buses pulled in for a pit stop on their way to Yankee Stadium. The Yankees were playing the Pirates that day at 4:05PM. There was a mixture of Yankee & Pirate fans. As I say, timing is everything. I was beside myself but I was all smiles when I got there.

Reason to smile
We got back in the car ‎& I drove to Brookville, PA where we got gas & made to order food at Sheetz around 3:45PM. I wound up eating my chicken fingers & mozzarella sticks in the car as we continued on to Cleveland. We arrived there shortly after 6PM. I arranged to meet up with our pal Rick Morris of the FDH Lounge outside Progressive Field, home of the Indians by the Bob Feller statue. I called him when I was 20 miles from downtown. He told me he was there already. He said he was going to stop off at a local bar so he could watch the Preakness. I told him I'll see him by the statue when he got done. We wound up meeting up around 6:30PM. We had bought some cheap tickets in advance so we were able to head right inside once we met up. We wound up meeting the King who was inside already in section 554 upstairs behind home plate.

As for the game we saw, the Indians were hosting the Oakland Athletics on this night. Former Met & Indian Scott Kazmir was starting for the A's. Thanks to home plate umpire Jerry Layne he wasn't long for the night. He wound up getting ejected for complaining about the strikeout zone or the lack thereof. He lasted just one ‎& a third innings. He gave up a run on a wild pitch while walking three & striking out one. However he got off the hook for the loss thanks to his teammate, third baseman Josh Donaldson who tied the game at one with a run scoring single in the top of the third inning which was followed by a two run homer by first baseman Brandon Moss which gave the A's a 3-1 lead. The Tribe got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to make it a 3-2 game. The Athletics wound up putting the game away with three more runs in the top of the seventh inning when Josh Donaldson & Brandon Moss struck again. This time Donaldson delivered a two run triple & Moss added a run scoring double to give the A's a 6-2 victory. Relief pitcher Dan Otero threw three & two thirds of shutout relief to earn the win. Josh Tomlin who started for the Indians suffered the loss despite getting a quality start as he went six innings allowing three earned runs. The bullpen let it slip away once he came out.

Regardless of the outcome, it was great to spend some quality time with our pal Rick Morris who's a big fan of the King & I. I want to thank him for always making time to join us when we come to visit.

After we said our goodbyes to him, we walked back to the car ‎& we drove 200 miles to Somerset, PA where we spent the night at Days Inn.

Stay tuned for another special post that will recap how we spent that Sunday.

Thank you for reading & following along.

Royalty sees the Subway Series & meets a few new roadtrippers too!‏

Last year the Mets wound up sweeping the four game series between them & the Yankees. They took the first two at Citi Field then the other two they played at Yankee Stadium. This time the Subway Series started at Yankee Stadium. The King & I went to all four games starting on Monday, May 12th. Here's how it turned out this time around.

Me at Yankee Stadium
In game one, the Mets took an early 1-0 lead just three batters into the game. They manufactured a run as Eric Young Jr. lead off with a base hit. He proceeded to steal second. He moved to third on a ground out. He then scored on another ground out. In the bottom of the second inning, the Yankees struck back‎, they loaded the bases with three straight singles to start the inning against former Yankee Bartolo Colon who beared down. He got the next two batters out but with two outs, Brett Gardner didn't let him escape unscathed. He delivered a big blow as he hit a grand slam to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead. The Mets got one back in the top of the fifth inning when catcher Travis d'Arnaud hit a solo homer to make it 4-2. The Mets got even in the top of the sixth when former Yankee Curtis Granderson hit a two run homer to tie the game at four. The Yankees answered right back as they score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up, 7-4. The Mets chipped away as they got within a run, 7-6 thanks to a two run homer by Eric Young Jr. in the top of the seventh inning. The Mets continued to fight back as they tied the game at seven on a run scoring single by Lucas Duda in the top of the eighth inning. They used the long ball again as Chris Young took one out to give the Mets the lead for good as they held off the Yankees, 9-7 to take game one. Lucas Duda saved the game with his glove as he started & finished a beautiful double play to preserve the win.

Tuesday night after work I returned to the Bronx for game two. I met up with the King at our seats in section 420B row 7. This time the Mets offensive surge continued early as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning. David Wright delivered a run scoring single which was followed by a three run blast by former Yankee Curtis Granderson off Yankee starter Vidal Nuno. The Mets practically gave it all back as the Yankees got some clutch hits with two outs off of Mets' starter Zack Wheeler. Mark Teixeira broke the shutout with a run scoring single which was followed by a two run homer by Brian McCann to make it 4-3 after one inning. The Mets extended their lead to 7-3 with a run in the third & two more in the fourth inning. The Yankees made it 7-4 after four. The Mets tacked on four more in the top of the fifth inning which was highlighted by a three run shot by Daniel Murphy to go up 11-4. This time the Mets didn't allow the Yankees to make it too interesting as they went on to beat them, 12-7.

Wednesday night the series shifted from the Bronx to Queens as the Mets came back home to Citi Field to finish the Subway Series with the Yankees.

Me with Kristina Munoz & Vincent Reardon
During the game, I got a special visit from a few up & coming road trippers, Vincent Reardon & his girl friend Kristina Munoz who are trying to see all 30 MLB ballparks before they turn 30 years old. They've been to seven ballparks thus far they said. ‎They told me they're making a West Coast trip in late June to see all five ballparks in California. I told them the King & I did a monster trip out there last August. They were in awe of our accomplishments. I told them we've been traveling together as long as they've been alive. Vincent said he lives in Astoria. With that being said, we're neighbors. As for Kristina, she's from the Bronx. I told them I'll guide them along so they can achieve their goal. It was nice to meet & greet them. I expect our paths to cross more often in the near future.

As for the game we saw, the Mets left their offense in the Bronx. They faced rookie Masahiro Tanaka, the sensational Japanese import who has lived up to the high expectations so far. The Mets found out firsthand on this night. Tanaka dominated as he allowed just four hits while walking none & striking out eight as he earned his first major league shutout. He also picked up his first major league hit. As for the Mets, rookie Rafael Montero made his major league debut. He pitched six innings allowing three runs. He walked two & he struck out three. Without any offensive support, he didn't stand a chance on this night.

Thursday night I returned to Citi Field for the finale of the four game set. The Mets bats were once again silenced by another rookie who made his major league debut, Chase Whitley. He didn't pitch long enough to qualify for the victory as he was pulled an out away from doing so. He left with the game scoreless. He did get his first major league hit, a single to right in the third inning. The Yankees couldn't get to another rookie who was making his major league debut for the Mets, Jacob deGrom who went seven innings. They finally got the game's only run a run scoring double in the seventh inning by Alfonso Soriano that proved to be the difference as the Yankees split the series with a 1-0 victory. Like Chase Whitley, Jacob deGrom also helped himself with the bat as he picked up his first major league hit. It should be noted it was the first hit by a Met pitcher this season.

Stay tuned as I plan to recap the weekend getaway the King ‎& I took to Cleveland & Washington DC in the middle of May.

Thank you for reading ‎& following along.

Yours truly,

Gary Herman

A Royal Day at Yankee Stadium with my Cousin Andy on May 3rd!‏

Early in April, I received an e-mail from the Yankees. Since I'm a long time Yankee season ticket holder, they invited me & a guest to come to a special Photo Day before the game between the Yankees & the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, May 3rd at 1:05PM. I knew the King wouldn't be interested. With that being said, I tried to ask other Yankee fans I knew if they wanted to take part in this unique opportunity. Unfortunately they all said no. Instead of missing out completely, I decided to ask my Cousin Andy if he wanted to go with me since I had gotten him a ticket for that particular game. He said sure. So I put in the request at the last minute. Ten days later, I got two passes in the mail. I told Andy & he was all excited. As a result, we needed to show up at the Stadium by 10:15AM that morning.

Photo Day at Yankee Stadium
Me on field next to scoreboard on the fence
CC Sabathia passing by us
The night before I went to the game which ended just before 1AM as the Yankees lost to the Rays, 10-5 in 14 innings. That's just what I needed knowing I had to get up earlier than usual Saturday morning. It worked out as I did meet Andy shortly after 10AM at the Stadium. When arrived the line to go inside was around the corner. Thankfully it was organized well so we were able to get inside in a timely fashion. We wound up standing on the warning track which was roped off. Shortly thereafter, all the Yankees players eventually passed by us as they walked out from the dugout. Some actually stopped along the way to take pictures with the fans. Those included Alfonso Soriano & Carlos Beltran to name a select few. Most of them like CC Sabathia waved hello and/or scooted on by. Not surprisingly, most of them really didn't care one way or the another. It's was an obligation for them. As for Andy ‎& I, we couldn't get any really good pictures of them because they were moving too fast. It was cool to see them close up though. In addition, it was also really neat to stand on the actual playing field too. After the players finished walking around, we walked back into the seating area.

Since we had a few hours to kill before the game started, Andy ‎& I decided to do something different. Believe it or not, I had never been to Monument Park before here at the New Yankee Stadium or at the Old Stadium. The reason being I usually come from work so I arrive shortly before game time. On the weekends, I usually like to catch up on lost sleep. With that being said, I never made the time to get to the Stadium early enough to line up to experience it. For that matter, neither did Andy.

Monument Park
‎They only allow fans into Monument Park which is located behind the center field fence up until 45 minutes before the game starts. We got on line & shortly thereafter we got inside. We walked around reading the plagues of Yankee Legends who have either had their uniform number retired and/or warranted a special place in Yankee lore. Here's a sample of those who reside there. They are as follows: #1Billy Martin #3 Babe Ruth #4 Lou Gehrig #5 Joe DiMaggio #7 Mickey Mantle #8 Yogi Berra #9 Roger Maris #10 Phil Rizzuto #15 Thurman Munson #16 Whitey Ford #23 Don Mattingly #42 Mariano Rivera #44 Reggie Jackson & #49 Ron Guidry among a handful of others. They also had a special plague for owner George Steinbrenner, PA announcer Bob Sheppard, Nelson Mandela & Pope John Paul who visited & one to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11. All in all, it was a moving experience to read about these all time great ballplayers & influential people over the history of time.

The Late George Steinbrenner
Yankees remember 9/11/01
Once we finished our tour, we walked around the concourse as we headed upstairs to our seats in section 420B. When we got up there we saw my pal Michael Abrams, a long time Yankee fan. That day was a personal milestone for him as he saw his 1,000th consecutive Yankee home game that was played in the Bronx. Among the people we know he's an iron man fan. He lives & dies with the pinstripes.

My Cousin Andy & I
In addition, the King & our pals Bryan Gilligan & Phil Butleman were present & accounted for as well that day.

As for the game we saw, the Yankees fell behind 3-0 as Desmond Jennings hit a solo homer off of starter Masahiro Tanaka in the first inning then Wil Myers added a solo shot in the fourth inning. The Yankees got a two run blast from Mark Teixeira in the bottom of the fourth inning to slice the lead to 3-2. In the fifth inning, they got even thanks to a run scoring double by Jacoby Ellsbury to knot the score at three. In the sixth inning, Kelly Johnson hit a solo homer to give them the lead, 4-3. They tacked on two more in the seventh & three more in the eighth as they went on to beat the Rays, 9-3. Tanaka went seven innings, he allowed the three runs & he struck out five as he won another game.

After the game, I said good bye to Andy. ‎I wound up going to Philadelphia with Bryan who drove the King, Phil & I there. We saw the Phillies host the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park that night.

Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia
We wound up meeting people we know who live down there. I'm referring to Phil Bruskin who was there with his brother Danny along with his son Benjamin. It was nice to see them all again.

As for the game we saw, the Phillies got a three run homer from Ryan Howard in the first inning off of Nationals' starter Tanner Roark which set the tone. Cody Asche added a solo homer in the second inning as the Phillies cruised to a 7-2 victory. They got a quality start from starter A.J. Burnett who allowed one run in six innings to earn the win while Tanner Roark suffered the loss giving up four runs in seven innings.

Stay tuned for a special post that will go into detail about this year's installment of the Subway Series between the Mets & the Yankees.

Royalty witnesses the return of Robinson Cano to the Bronx!‏

In the off season, business decisions are made. This past winter the Yankees had to make some moves that forced them to part with one of their home grown players. The Yankees decided that paying Robinson Cano a ridiculous amount of money wasn't worth it for them in the long run. As a result, they let him go. Cano wound up getting 240 million dollars on the open market from the Seattle Mariners. He & his representatives initially told the Yankees he wanted 305 million dollars. Apparently that starting point turned them off. They decided to go in a different direction. As a result, they wound up getting Carlos Beltran, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann & Masahiro Tanaka instead. I personally thought they did the right thing. I would have liked Cano to have stayed with the Yankees because he came up through their farm system starting out in Staten Island. Unfortunately in this day & age, players rarely play their whole career with one team. He could have been an exception to that rule. However, last summer he hired Roc Nation who's lead by Jay Z to represent him as his new agent. That was the first step towards his ultimate departure. For his sake, I hope he's enjoying life in the Northwest.

On Tuesday night April 29th, Robinson Cano returned to the Bronx as a member of the Seattle Mariners. After work that night I met the King at Yankee Stadium. I didn't know what to expect when he came up to bat for the first time. I figured it would be a mixed reaction. I was a bit surprised how the fans reacted. They for the most part serenaded him with a chorus of boos. That's New York fans for you. They're known for their fickleness & front running not their knowledge & class. When the Yankees make a splash & over pay for a top free agent on the market it's fine & dandy. Now that the Yankees let Cano go, the fans revolted against him. ‎He did what any other proud American would have done, he capitalized on his opportunity  on the open market. In fairness to the Yankees, they can't keep everyone. They made a business decision & they have to live with it.

Robinson Cano
As for the game we saw, Robinson Cano wound up going one for five in his return. On the positive side, he did drive in a run with a ground out & he got an infield single. On the other hand, he grounded out another time & he struck out twice. He heard the boos all night long. The Yankees lead 2-0 early but the Mariners wound up getting to Yankee starter CC Sabathia who gave up four runs in five innings of work. ‎The Mariners got a two run double from Corey Hart & a run scoring single from Justin Smoak as they knocked out CC by scoring the four runs in the fifth inning. In addition, catcher Mike Zunino got four hits before he struck out his last time at bat as Robinson Cano & the Mariners got the last laugh on this night as they went on to beat the Yankees, 6-3.

Wednesday night the game was rained out. With a horrible forecast that called for rain all day & night, they wisely decided to call the game off shortly after 1PM in the afternoon. They didn't reschedule the game the next day. They waited until both teams had a compatible open day which turned out to be June 2nd to make up the game.

Thursday night May 1st they played ‎game two of their abbreviated series. Since the Baltimore Orioles also got rained out & they decided to play a straight single admission doubleheader the King decided to take a Greyhound bus down there instead. As a result, he skipped the Yankee game. Our friend Frank Anichiarico aka Duck took his place.

As for me, I went there after work. When I got to me seat in section 420B row 7 I was greeted by my pal Greg Venuto who came down from Connecticut with a friend of his to see the game. While he was waiting for his friend to arrive, he stopped by to say hello to me. As always, it was nice to see him again.

Greg Venuto & I at Yankee Stadium
Shortly thereafter, I got a visit from a fellow ballpark chaser named Roy Spierer who's a big Yankee fan as well. He came up special to meet & greet me. He was all dressed up in his Yankee gear that included quite a collection of pins which he likes to collect. He lives in New Jersey & has a half season ticket package for the Trenton Thunder which is the Yankees Double A affiliate in the Eastern League he said. He mentioned to me that he may take a road trip to Chicago ‎& Milwaukee in late July. I told him to let me know if he needs any advice. I want to personally thank him for coming by. I hope to see him again in the future.

Roy Spierer & I at Yankee Stadium
As for the game we saw, the Mariners jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a double by Robinson Cano who once again heard it from the Yankee faithful who were on hand. The Yankees got even fast as Jacoby Ellsbury lead off the bottom of the first inning with a home run to tie the game at one. The Mariners regained the lead, 2-1 in the top of the third inning when Robinson Cano hit into a fielder's choice. In the fourth inning, the Mariners extended their lead to 4-1 on a pair of two out clutch run scoring singles by shortstop Brad Miller & center fielder Michael Saunders. The Yankees got a run in the sixth inning when Brian McCann delivered a run scoring single to make it a 4-2 game but that's the way it ended as Robinson Cano who finished one for four at the plate got the last laugh as the Mariners won again. The Yankees wasted a quality start by Hiroki Kuroda who gave up all four runs but one was unearned. As for the Mariners, they got a better performance from their starter Roenis Elias who went seven strong innings allowing two runs while walking two & striking out ten.

Stay tuned for another special post that will recap a special day I had at Yankee Stadium on the first Saturday in May.

Thank you for reading & following along.
